Asbestos

As asbestos particles enter the body, they begin to accumulate in the respiratory and digestive systems. These fibers are so small they often penetrate organs at the microscopic level, protruding through organs into the body cavity. Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers mutate the cells on the lining that surrounds the interior body cavity, called the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a layer of cells that secretes lubrication that allows organs like the heart and lungs to move properly. As these cells mutate and die, lungs cannot take in as much air, and the heart experiences great difficulty beating. Also, since the lungs are responsible for providing air to the blood, cancerous mesothelioma cells can spread all throughout the body through the bloodstream, further complicating an already deadly condition.

There is little doubt about the link between asbestos and mesothelioma. What is in doubt is the role asbestos companies are responsible for their negligence in failing to warn people about the dangers of their products. If you or someone you love suffers from mesothelioma, you have the right to consult an attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer is the first step in pursing a settlement to recover damages caused to you by asbestos. Don’t hesitate though, for your state limits the amount time you have to initiate legal action. Contact a lawyer today.

TREATMENT OF MESOTHELIOMA

Its incurable ... but there are methods to increase life expectancy and reduce pain.

Mesothelioma is incurable, however treatment is available. The treatment can prolong the patient's life and make the process less painful. The conventional therapies used in cancer also apply for mesothelioma. These therapies focus on destroying the malignant cells while preserving the healthy ones, by using different chemical and physical means.

Factors like the location of the cancer, the stage of the condition, the patient's age and general health determine the treatment options of mesothelioma. Typically, treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. These treatments are usually taken as an alternative to each other, but in some cases they might have to be combined for better results.

Surgery is the most common treatment option for mesothelioma. Typically, the doctor would remove the infected part of the chest or abdomen and some tissue around it that might be infected with virus. In advanced cases of pleural mesothelioma an operation called pneumonectomy can be performed, in which a lung might have to be removed. In some cases, a part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs, might be removed to facilitate breathing.

Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, is another alternative treatment for mesothelioma. It involves the use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink the tumor. External radiation from a machine or internal radiation therapy, in which radiation is produced through thin plastic tubes into the virus-affected area, can be opted for. The therapy affects the cancer cells only in the areas under scrutiny.

Chemotherapy is another treatment option, typically for advanced mesothelioma cases. In this treatment anti-cancer drugs are used to kill cancer cells throughout the body. These drugs are injected in the body by means of intravenous injections. The option of injecting these drugs directly into the chest or abdomen exists; however its effectiveness is still under scrutiny.

Thoracentesis for the chest and paracentesis for the abdomen, can be performed to remove the fluids built up. A thin needle or a tube is used to drain this fluid from the chest or abdomen. Also, drugs can be injected through a tube to prevent more fluid from accumulating. Radiation therapy and surgery also help in relieving the painful symptoms.

During the treatment, the progress is regularly monitored; using X-rays, MRIs and CT scans. Depending on the response to the treatment, the process can be stopped or altered accordingly. Side effects might erupt during the treatment, but there are various medications available to withstand these toxic effects.

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive cancer. Sometimes the conventional methods might not to be as effective as they are for other types of cancers. If the condition is in its advanced stage its better to opt for chemotherapy rather than surgery or radiotherapy.

what is mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which can be dormant for 30 to 50 years

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer typically caused by regular and unprotected exposure to asbestos. Malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, which is a thin membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs of the body. It typically affects major organs of the body like the heart, stomach and lungs.

In a typical case of malignant mesothelioma the cells of the mesothelium tend to become abnormal and divide without control or order. These cancer cells can permeate into other parts of the body, and infest and destroy its tissues and organs.

Mesothelioma typically affects the pleura, the outer lining of the lungs; however, cases of infection in the peritoneum, the lining of the stomach and the pericardium, a sac surrounding the heart, have also been seen. According to statistics, for every person diagnosed with peritoneum mesothelioma there will be about 12 people diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

Asbestos poisoning is the primary reason for the cause of asbestos. 70% to 80% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have either worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust or fiber in other ways, like washing clothes of a family member who works with asbestos or by home renovation utilizing asbestos cement products.

According to some researchers the virus, SV40, may also be a factor in the development of mesothelioma. Cigarette smoking also leads to an increased risk of lung cancer and other asbestos-related diseases. However, it hasn't been found to be a direct contributor to mesothelioma, although if a person has been exposed to asbestos and smokes cigarettes, they are susceptible to contracting mesothelioma.

According to the National Cancer Institute, every year approximately 2000 to 3000 new cases of malignant mesothelioma are being reported in the US. For every 100,000 people, 1.8 in the US and 0.9 worldwide are believed to be suffering from mesothelioma.

The incidence of the disease has risen significantly in the past 30 years, and is expected to go further up. Mesothelioma is three times more common in men than in women, and its incidence is ten times higher among men in their 60s rather than those in their 40s.

Eighty million people in the US have succumbed to the disease due to occupational exposure to asbestos over the past fifty years. Advancements have been made in this direction; however, there is no cure yet, essentially because its symptoms can take anything between 20 to 50 years to surface. The life expectancy after being diagnosed with mesothelioma is found to be less than a year.

How is mesothelioma diagnosed?
A diagnosis of mesothelioma is most often obtained with careful assessment of clinical and radiological findings in addition to a confirming tissue biopsy. (Learn about typical mesothelioma symptoms. A review of the patient's medical history, including history of asbestos exposure is taken, followed by a complete physical examination, x-rays of the chest or abdomen, and lung function tests. A CT scan or MRI may also be done at this time. If any of these preliminary tests prove suspicious for mesothelioma; a biopsy is necessary to confirm this diagnosis.
Imaging Techniques and Their Value in Diagnosing and Assessing Mesothelioma

There are several imaging techniques which may prove useful when mesothelioma is suspected due to the presence of pleural effusion combined with a history of occupational or secondary asbestos exposure. While these imaging techniques can be valuable in assessing the possibility of the cancer, definitive diagnosis is still most often established through fluid diagnosis or tissue biopsy.

Some of the most commonly used imaging methods include:

• X-ray

A chest x-ray can reveal pleural effusion (fluid build-up) which is confined to either the right (60%) or left (40%) lung. On occasion, a mass may be seen. Signs of prior non-cancerous asbestos disease, such as pleural plaques or pleural calcification, or scarring due to asbestosis may also be noted.

• Computed Tomography (CT)

CT scans are also able to define pleural effusion, as well as pleural thickening, pleural calcification, thickening of interlobular fissures, or possible chest wall invasion. CT, however, is not able to differentiate between changes associated with benign asbestos disease (pleural disease), or differentiate between adenocarcinoma of the lung which may have spread to the pleura verses mesothelioma. CT scans may also be valuable in guiding fine needle aspiration of pleural masses for tissue diagnosis.

• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI scans are most often used to determine the extent of tumor prior to aggressive treatment. Because they provide images in multiple planes, they are better able to identify tumors as opposed to normal structures. They are also more accurate than CT scans in assessing enlargement of the mediastinal lymph nodes (those lymph nodes which lie between the two lungs), as well as a clear diaphragmatic surface, both of which play an important role in surgical candidacy.

• Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

PET imaging is now becoming an important part of the diagnosis and evaluation of mesothelioma. While PET scans are more expensive than other types of imaging, and are not always covered under insurance, they are now considered to be the most diagnostic of tumor sites, as well as the most superior in determining the staging of mesothelioma. Further explanation of PET scans.

• CT/PET

For patients who may be candidates for aggressive multimodality treatment (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation), accurate clinical staging is extremely important. Integrated CT/PET imaging provides a relatively new tool in this respect, and has become the imaging technique of choice for determining surgical eligibility. By combining the benefits of CT and PET (anatomic and metabolic information) into a single scan, this technology can more accurately determine the stage of the cancer, and can help identify the best treatment option for the patient.

Mesothelioma patients and their families deserve support, information, and understanding. We created the Mesothelioma Network with these needs in mind. We also hope to educate the public about mesothelioma, a rare cancer that is almost always caused by asbestos exposure.

This web site contains detailed information about mesothelioma diagnosis, mesothelioma treatment, clinical trials, and medical breakthroughs. You will also find useful resources such as lists of physicians and medical centers that treat mesothelioma. Because we understand that a mesothelioma diagnosis may be devastating to you and your loved ones, we have included coping suggestions and information about support groups.

Our news section can help you keep up with the fight against asbestos on the job and in the environment as well as provide the latest medical updates. Should you have any questions about the legal aspects of your mesothelioma diagnosis, please feel free to contact us. We have been handling mesothelioma cases for over 20 years, and have an excellent record of verdicts and settlements. For more information, see Our Mesothelioma Lawyers.

Asbestos exposure is the main cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos fibers are very tiny and may be inhaled if they become airborne. Once you inhale asbestos fibers, they can remain trapped in your lungs. They may also be distributed throughout your body to the pleura (the membrane lining the lungs), to other body organs, or to your lymph nodes.

Inhaling asbestos irritates your system and may eventually lead to asbestos diseases such as asbestosis and asbestos pleural disease as well as to mesothelioma. You can also unknowingly swallow asbestos particles, a process that some associate with peritoneal (stomach) mesothelioma.
Period Between Asbestos Exposure and Development of Mesothelioma

The time period between your first exposure to asbestos and the onset of mesothelioma symptoms, called the latency period, may be 40 years or more. The risk of developing asbestos disease does not disappear because the asbestos fibers may remain trapped in the lungs or the lung cavity for life. Also, there is no “safe” level of asbestos exposure; even minimal levels may cause disease.
Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Among Workers

Workers in the building, construction, shipbuilding, railroad, and automotive industries who have been exposed to asbestos are at particularly high risk for developing mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure at any level increases a person’s chance of contracting mesothelioma. Even family members of workers exposed to asbestos face an increased susceptibility to the disease due to contact with asbestos dust brought into the home on the workers’ shoes, clothing, skin, or hair.

In the past, asbestos exposure occurred mostly in an occupational setting where asbestos was used in a variety of products and applications. Today, potential asbestos exposure occurs in other locations as well, most often in schools, homes and public buildings where asbestos products have fallen into disrepair or become damaged.

If you believe that you or a family member has been exposed to asbestos, it is important to learn more about the symptoms and diagnosis of mesothelioma. Also see our sister site, Asbestos Network for background and details about asbestos. Please feel free to contact us through this web site or at our offices with any questions about asbestos exposure and your legal options.

Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is one of the deadliest diseases known to man; the average life span of an inflicted person from the time of diagnosis until death

What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the cells that make up the lining around the outside of the lungs and inside of the ribs (pleura), or around the abdominal organs (peritoneum).

What does asbestos have to do with mesothelioma?
The only known cause of mesothelioma in the U.S. is previous exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos manufacturers knew about the hazards of asbestos seventy years ago - but they kept this knowledge to themselves. The first warnings to workers exposed to asbestos were given in the mid-1960s, and they were terribly inadequate. Even today, workers are not always told they are working around asbestos and are at risk for asbestos disease.

battle of the bulge

The battle of the bulge." That tiny, five-word phrase has been shoved in our faces for years, thanks to television, newspapers and magazines. But sometimes, no matter how hard you fight, the bulge has a tougher army. The fact is that certain people have fat cells that will not shrink, despite diet and exercise. You can thank heredity for that in some cases.

Liposuction is an option to remove small bulges that won't budge and to improve your body's shape. The areas most commonly treated include the hips, abdomen, thighs and buttocks and face. Liposuction does not remove cellulite, only fat.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Liposuction?

A good candidate for liposuction should have realistic expectations about the results of this procedure as well as these basic qualities:

* Average or only slightly above-average weight
* Firm, elastic skin
* In good overall health
* Concentrated pockets of fat that do not respond well to diet and exercise

Patients with poor skin quality (cellulite) are not good candidates for liposuction because they may develop skin irregularities due to under- or over-correction of localized fat deposits. Age is generally not a major consideration when discussing liposuction; however, older patients often have less elasticity in their skin and thus may not achieve the same benefits of liposuction that a younger patient with tighter skin might achieve.

Treating Aging Skin

New innovations in skin rejuvenation continue to develop, ranging from topically applied "cosmeceuticals" to new surgical techniques. A thorough understanding of how your skin changes as you age and how the sun affects your skin can help you decide with your doctor what treatment is best.

DMARDs

work by interfering with or suppressing the immune system that attacks the joints in people with certain forms of inflammatory arthritis. Aggressive treatment of arthritis often involves using one or more DMARDs.

Although effective, DMARDs have a higher risk of serious side effects. It also often takes weeks for you to notice the benefits of taking a DMARD. Therefore, they are often combined with a faster working drug such as an NSAID, another painkiller, or steroids to help relieve some arthritis symptoms.

Medicine Guides

Medicine Guides are a new source of information for members of the public who are looking for information about individual medicines that is up-to-date, reliable and understandable.

The Medicine Guides are being developed as part of the Medicines Information Project which aims to provide people with information about medicines, conditions and the different treatment options available.

It is being developed in partnership with NHS Direct and with input from a broad range of other organisations all of which have the same goal of providing better medicines information for people. Further details about the project and the organisations involved can be found here.

The information in Medicine Guides is continuously updated and checked by information pharmacists and the manufacturers for factual accuracy.

Funding and resources for the project are provided by the NHS and a number of pharmaceutical companies, a list of which can b

Arthritis

There are literally dozens of medications available over-the-counter and by prescription to treat the various forms of arthritis. Your doctor can help you choose what drugs are best for your particular disease.

These over-the counter drugs can provide quick pain relief for people with arthritis that is in just a few joints -- such as a hand or whose pain isn't severe.

These drugs, both over-the-counter and prescription, can be used to relieve the symptoms of arthritis (joint swelling, stiffness, and pain). Almost everyone with arthritis has taken or is taking one of these drugs.

Often these drugs are called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs.

Steroids are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that can treat many forms of arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, plus lupus and other forms of inflammation such as vasculitis.

Although effective, steroids have many side effects, especially when taken as a pill. Often, doctors try to avoid these problems by injecting the steroid into the affected joint or trying other medications in combination to keep the dose of steroids as low as possible.

Tablet coatings

Revolutionary tablet coater that accurately deposits controlled amounts of coating materials on tablets, even if they are extremely hygroscopic or friable.

Tablet coating technology in the pharmaceutical industry has remained fundamentally unchanged for the past 50 years. Until now. Inconsistent and imperfect, this “standard” practice of tablet coating often delivers a non-homogenous product. Because the tablets are loaded in large rotating pans and vented for hot air drying, tablet edges can get grounded off, intagliations can get filled in by coating material, and edges and corners may not be coated with the same thickness as the tablet faces. The inaccuracy of deposition of coating material limits the use of modified release coatings. In a laboratory setting, it is necessary to coat several kilograms of tablets at one time, making Research & Development of a tablet dosage form costly and difficult.

In addition, extremely hydroscopic tablets cannot be coated with current technology, nor can flat or other odd shapes be consistently coated. The process must be run slowly to prevent "twinning", where two or more tablets stick together. Tablets may also be coated in a Wurster-type coating apparatus, but tablet attrition generally prevents all but the hardest tablets from being coated this way.
